Low Platelets, Thrombocytopenia and Health

Blood platelets enable blood to clot when we are wounded, so a low platelet count (thrombocytopenia) can be a serious condition. Platelets can be lowered if the bone marrow doesn’t make enough platelets, if the body destroys the platelets once they are made, or if the spleen, which stores platelets, enlarges. Certain genetic problems, autoimmune diseases, chemicals, medications, medical treatments, infections and nutritional deficiencies can all lower the platelet count.
