Comparing WordPress to Joomla

There are many differences and similarities between WordPress and Joomla. One major difference is that WordPress is a blog style content management system while Joomla is a portal or community type CMS. A major similarity is that both WordPress and Joomla are open source (free to use) CMS. To work with both WordPress and Joomla you to need have basic knowledge of PHP.

With the release of WordPress 3.0, more users prefer WordPress than Joomla due to features like custom menu, multi-site features etc. The elementary and flexible menu process is easy to generate, edit, re-arrange menus using categories, pages etc. Also, with just one installation of WordPress a user has the ability to manage multiple websites.

Both Joomla and WordPress have an immense user base with a lively community. In the net tool section, most hosting providers have WordPress and Joomla as an option. Both WP and Joomla can be setup in a fast manner and rank quickly in the search engines.

The precursor to WordPress is b2 or cafelog. Joomla is feature rich and complicated but it lacks in interface design decisions. A couple disadvantages of WordPress are:

  • Knowledge of WP scripting is necessary for adding or removing post dates and need to be changed in design mode.
  • Customizing the look and feel of the site requires knowledge of CSS, the style sheet language.

In short, both Joomla and WordPress have their advantages and disadvantages. Compared with Joomla, WordPress is more elementary, faster and user-friendly. This is a major reason why more people are choosing WordPress over Joomla for their Content Managements Systems.
